Hemorrhagic Stroke Symptoms in Children - Oren Zarif - Hemorrhagic Stroke

While most hemorrhagic strokes occur in older adults, children can also be affected. In fact, 44% of children and 13% of adults have this type of stroke. However, these symptoms may not be noticeable at birth, and may resemble other conditions. They may only become obvious as the child grows and develops. However, if these symptoms do appear, emergency treatment may include steps to relieve pressure on the brain and prevent dehydration.

The blood in a hemorrhagic stroke enters the brain through a weakened artery. The blood pressure on the affected area increases, and the brain cells start to die. The causes of hemorrhagic strokes are not clear, but they usually involve an abnormality in blood vessel linings. A ruptured aneurysm or arteriovenous malformation is a common culprit. Other potential causes of hemorrhagic stroke are clotting disorders and brain tumors.

The first investigation for suspected hemorrhagic stroke is CT scan. CT scans show attenuation changes over a few hours. CT is the gold standard for hemorrhage, but the newer MRIs, such as T2* susceptibility-weighted magnetic resonance imaging, are even better at detecting prior hemorrhage. If you have ever had a stroke, don't hesitate to get immediate medical treatment.

Other risk factors for hemorrhagic strokes are a congenital condition known as arteriovenous malformation (AVM). This condition causes abnormal blood vessel walls in the brain to weaken and rupture, causing a hemorrhagic stroke. In addition, aneurysms - tiny blood-filled pouches prone to leaking or bursting - are also common. Cerebral arteriovenous malformations, such as tangled veins, may also cause bleeding. And a tumor that contains abnormal blood vessel walls can result in bleeding.

While hemorrhagic strokes share many of the same symptoms of other types of strokes, they are more dangerous. In addition to the signs and symptoms listed above, they can result in death or a coma. Once the symptoms have occurred, treatment may include physical therapy and other types of therapy. A patient may need lifelong care. Hemorrhagic stroke patients may also need to undergo surgery in order to prevent another hemorrhagic stroke.

Acute symptoms of hemorrhagic stroke may include drooping arms or face, loss of balance, and sudden, unsteady walking. Patients may also experience difficulty speaking, have slurred speech, or have trouble understanding other people's words. They may also experience difficulty concentrating, interpreting speech, and have a difficulty remembering time. If you suspect a stroke, call 911 or your local emergency services. It is vital to treat this ailment quickly to prevent further damage to the brain.

Hemorrhagic stroke patients should be treated in a dedicated stroke unit. This unit should be staffed with emergency care and neurology, neurosurgery, and cardiology specialists. In addition, intensivists must be trained in emergency neurological life support. In addition to the above-mentioned treatments, UT Southwestern offers surgical and endovascular interventions to manage hemorrhagic stroke. Endovascular procedures can be used to treat these patients, while surgical intervention is reserved for those with a history of stroke.

An intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) accounts for about 10% of all strokes. However, the risk of dying from an ICH is higher. Almost half of large hemorrhage victims die within the first few days of their illness. However, survivors may recover some or all of their brain functions over time. It is important to note that most patients who survive an ICH do not recover full function.

Hemorrhagic stroke can cause severe loss of mental and physical abilities. Individuals affected by this condition will be unable to reason, understand concepts, and control their emotions. Some sufferers even develop depression. The effects of stroke may also include pain, numbness, and tingling sensations. Eventually, the person may require assistance with daily activities, such as bathing or brushing their teeth.

After a person has had a hemorrhagic stroke, it is imperative to seek medical attention as soon as possible. The brain requires oxygen in order to survive, and if that oxygen supply is interrupted, the tissue in that part of the brain will die. Aneurysms weaken the walls of the blood vessels and make it more susceptible to stroke. If left untreated, they may result in a coma.

There are two different types of stroke: thrombotic and hemorrhagic. A hemorrhagic stroke can result from a blood clot that travels through the bloodstream to the brain. The latter is usually associated with heart disease, and 15% of these cases are caused by atrial fibrillation, an abnormal heart rhythm. Hemorrhagic stroke also occurs when blood travels through the subarachnoid space and causes bleeding in the brain.
