In November 2016, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada rebranded as Heart & Stroke, a new organization dedicated to education, research, and advocacy. As with the previous organization, the new name makes it easier for people to recognize the foundation's mission and work towards a cure. The new name also better reflects the foundation's overall mission statement, which calls for a healthier lifestyle and increased investment in research.

Acute blockage of the atherosclerotic arteries can be caused by severe infection or a sudden change in blood pressure. Acute blockage can also develop in other vessels. While treatment for heart attack and stroke can often be as simple as lifestyle changes, sometimes more invasive procedures may be needed. Angioplasty with stents or coronary artery bypass grafting may be needed. These procedures may be performed after a diagnosis of heart attack and stroke.

Different people experience heart and stroke attacks in different ways. Recovery time is typically short in many cases, but for others, recovery may take months or years. Rehabilitation usually begins in the hospital, with specialists assessing the individual's needs and goals. Ultimately, the goal of rehabilitation is to get the patient back to their pre-stroke condition, and support their return to their daily lives. In many cases, stroke rehabilitation may require the assistance of a professional.

Heart and stroke are two separate disorders that can be devastating to a patient. Coronary heart disease is caused by plaque buildup on arteries that supply the brain. The resulting hemorrhagic stroke, in contrast, occurs when a blood vessel breaks in the brain and leaks blood into the surrounding tissue. Moreover, coronary heart disease can lead to stroke, although the two conditions are often confused. However, the two diseases are related and should be treated as necessary.

Regular checkups are vital for heart health and can help a person avoid a heart attack. The sooner a person can identify the symptoms, the more likely they will be able to get treatment for their condition. The statistics show that one in four Canadians suffers from some form of heart disease at some point. If left untreated, this can lead to chronic pain, reduced activity, and disability, even in the workplace. This is why the Heart and Stroke organization needs to create a new brand identity and encourage people to get involved.

Aside from limiting the impact of stroke on a person's life, the first priority after a stroke is to prevent a repeat. Those who have experienced stroke or had a heart attack must undergo thorough evaluation and monitoring for several days to prevent a relapse. A healthcare team will assess the heart to determine if there is an ongoing cardiac problem. Cardiac arrhythmias and myocardial infarction are some of the most common complications among stroke survivors.

There are several warning signs of a heart attack or stroke. A person who feels uncomfortable pressure or fullness in the chest is most likely suffering from a heart attack. Other warning signs of a heart attack include chest pain, neck or jaw pain, shortness of breath, or lightheadedness. If you experience any of these symptoms, call 9-1-1 right away for emergency treatment. However, if you do have any other signs, you should not delay - a heart attack or stroke can be life-threatening.
