What is a Concussion? - Oren Zarif - Concussion

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury, and it is quite common among contact sports participants. These injuries are typically accompanied by changes in mental status, such as loss of consciousness or a loss of memory. Sometimes, focal neurologic deficits can also be present. Fortunately, there is now an accurate way to diagnose pediatric concussions. A CT scan will help your doctor decide if your child has a concussion.

The symptoms of concussion can vary, but they generally include vision, balance, and mood. While traditional treatment for concussions involved plenty of rest, more recent treatments target specific symptoms. A comprehensive assessment may be necessary before returning to sports or activities with a high risk of further head injury or contact. If a medical professional feels that a concussion is affecting your ability to play, he or she will refer you to a specialist who will be able to determine the appropriate treatment.

Physical therapy may be an option for concussion treatment, as well as cervical spine rehabilitation. A soft foam neck brace may be helpful for a temporary immobilization of the neck. Injections of lidocaine or steroids can relieve neck pain. Your healthcare provider can help you decide how best to proceed. In the meantime, it is important to rest for a minimum of 24 hours, and slowly resume physical activities. Don't rush yourself to return to activities unless you've been properly cleared by your healthcare provider.

Symptoms of concussion can occur immediately or several days after an injury. However, if the head injury was particularly severe, a CT or MRI scan may be necessary to assess the extent of any injury. However, neuroimaging studies are usually not necessary for minor concussions. Symptoms of concussions may not be immediately apparent, and the physician will ask you to stay awake and look for any signs of bleeding inside the brain.

There are long-term problems associated with a concussion, such as memory impairments, headaches, and issues with physical skills such as balance. Returning to competition too soon may lead to another concussion, which is known as second impact syndrome. In extreme cases, it could result in brain hemorrhage and even death. Athletes should stay away from competitive sports until they're fully recovered.

If your child has sustained a concussion, he or she should visit a physician right away. Concussions can be life-threatening, but they are generally not a serious problem. In the meantime, symptoms will last for days and may last weeks. Consult with a doctor if you're concerned. The sooner your child is treated, the better your chance of recovery. So, do not wait!
