A brain contusion is a type of traumatic brain injury, in which the brain tissue bleeds from an impact or a bruise. This type of injury may occur anywhere along the brain, including the skull and dura mater, the tough membrane surrounding the spinal cord and brain. A cerebral contusion may occur in any part of the brain, but is most often caused by a blow to the head. If a brain contusion occurs on the floor of the anterior fossa, a space in the front of the skull, it will most likely impact the frontal lobes.

A cerebral contusion may be a hematoma, in which blood collects inside the brain after an injury. It occurs most commonly in severe head trauma. A hematoma may also form in the muscle or tissue just beneath the skin. Although the most common complication is cerebral edema, there are several types of cerebral hematoma. Treatments depend on the size and location of the hematoma.

A brain contusion may be severe enough to affect an individual's life, limiting their ability to function, and affecting their mental state. While the effects of a cerebral contusion are often temporary, some individuals may need intensive care and close monitoring. Some people may recover completely, while others may experience permanent disability. The number of focal perfusion deficits varies according to location. A focal perfusion deficit may be localized in the area of trauma or in the contralateral hemisphere of the patient's cerebral axis. The severity of the perfusion deficit depends on where the trauma has occurred and whether the patient had prior treatment or not. In one study, 11 patients had diffuse hypoperfusion of the frontal lobe. In a separate study, researchers found a direct correlation between time and the number of focal perfusion deficits and the severity of the concussion.

When a person suffers a concussion, the symptoms of a brain contusion may include an intense headache. Sometimes, the pain may be so severe that the patient loses consciousness. Other symptoms may include confusion, drowsiness, or even a deep coma. Patients with a concussion usually undergo intracranial pressure monitoring (ICP) to understand changes and adjust medications accordingly. Patients with a traumatic brain injury are often also evaluated for intracranial infection and bacterial meningitis using CSF biochemistry. The results of this study suggest that CSF blood gas analysis is a reliable indicator of CC severity. CT scans usually show no abnormalities, whereas MRI scanning can also reveal a brain injury that is distinct from contusion. Diagnosis of a cerebral contusion is based on a series of tests. CT imaging and magnetic resonance imaging are useful for detecting intracranial hematomas. The doctor may recommend treatment based on the size and location of the hematoma. Treatment is aimed at reducing the effects of the intracranial hematoma. During the process, fluid may accumulate within the brain, increasing intracranial pressure. Cerebral edema is the main cause of death due to this condition.

Although the presence of CC is important for diagnosis, only a few neurosurgical studies have investigated its prognosis. Moreover, the presence of basal cistern involvement and age are independent risk factors for poor outcomes. The Normogram model has high predictive power and is also inexpensive. When used in conjunction with CT imaging, it can be used to improve patient outcomes. When using a nomogram, however, it is critical to consider the patient's overall health.
