What Are the Symptoms of Concussion? - Oren Zarif - Concussion

Symptoms of concussion may not be immediately noticeable, but you should visit a doctor as soon as possible if you experience any of them. These symptoms will change over a few hours or days as the brain is subjected to stress. Severe headaches and loss of consciousness, numbness, dizziness, and trouble walking are all signs of concussion. Your doctor may also perform a brain imaging test.

A neurologist is a physician who specializes in brain disorders. Neuropsychologists evaluate mental function disorders through standardized tests. Neurologic examinations are almost always normal. In the event of concussion, the doctor will most likely work together with a neuropsychologist to determine the severity of symptoms and whether further tests are necessary. After the initial diagnosis, treatment may include physical therapy or medication. Sometimes, surgery may be necessary if your symptoms are severe or persist for a long time.

For minor concussions, evaluation by a doctor in the emergency room is not necessary. However, if a concussion is suspected, a CT scan or MRI may be done to rule out bleeding or other serious brain injuries. Athletes should not return to their sports after a concussion, even with medical supervision. Furthermore, resuming play too early can lead to another concussion and can cause further damage.

The National Athletic Trainers Association (NAAT) offers a video called Heads Up, which explains the different types of head injuries. A video called Heads Up explains these conditions and offers advice on what to do if you have suffered a concussion. If you are able to go back to school, you should do so gradually and as soon as possible. A concussion recovery plan must be customized for each student and should involve a family physician or concussive specialist. You can also share your plan with your school. After a day or two of recovery, your student should gradually add mental activities, such as reading or writing in a journal. After a week or two, you can consider returning to your regular classes, but for now, it is important to get lots of rest.

A typical concussion recovery can last several weeks, but in severe cases, your symptoms may continue for years. The most important treatment for concussion is rest, but you should gradually exercise your brain. The brain remains stagnant when it is not in use, so too much stimulation may cause the symptoms to return. Whenever possible, avoid doing activities that trigger your symptoms. If you do have to, try to limit the amount of time you spend on technology.

If your physician has determined that your symptoms are caused by a traumatic brain injury, you should wait for 24 hours before starting any physical activity. Research shows that a patient's symptoms will gradually improve throughout the day, but you should still wait for 24 hours before starting any physical activity. Do not engage in vigorous physical activity until a medical provider gives you the okay to continue playing. The longer you wait, the more likely the symptoms will worsen.

You may notice discharge from your ears or nose. Your eyes may be unresponsive or your head may become swollen. If you have an injury to your head or face, a doctor will check for swelling. X-rays or other imaging techniques will help diagnose a more serious concussion. You should immediately contact a physician if you notice any of these symptoms. Even if you are not conscious, the doctor will be able to provide you with the proper treatment.

Once you've been diagnosed with concussion, rest at home and avoid screen time. Screen time can exacerbate the symptoms of concussion. Also, avoid any activity that could cause you another head injury. Sleep is also essential to recover from concussion. Be sure to follow your regular sleeping schedule and get plenty of rest. Even when you're not feeling well, you should make sure you continue to stay away from stressful situations.

A concussion may cause long-term symptoms such as problems with concentration, memory, and physical skills like balance. One in ten concussions causes loss of consciousness. You may be confused, have trouble answering basic questions, or move in an awkward way. Athletes should not participate in competitions until they've fully recovered from the symptoms. If you do return to play after a concussion, it's likely to result in a repeat concussion.
