The effects of stroke may be lifelong. While some stroke survivors can recover from the damage to the brain in a short time, many need ongoing rehabilitation. After stroke, survivors are encouraged to participate in rehabilitation by setting goals for their recovery. Various treatment methods are available, including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and psychological assessment. A physical therapist can teach stroke survivors how to adjust to the new limitations. In addition to physical therapy, stroke survivors may receive cognitive behavioural therapy, which involves training the brain to think in a more positive manner.

Thrombolytic therapy involves injecting a medication known as tPA, also known as alteplase. This medication works by dissolving clots in the blood vessels that supply the brain. Another treatment, called mechanical thrombectomy, involves threading a catheter into an artery and using suction to remove the clot. Fortunately, these treatments can reduce the long-term disability caused by a stroke.

Ischemic stroke is caused by a blockage in an intracranial artery. Patients with this type of stroke are given a drug called tissue plasminogen activator (r-tPA). It is effective in reducing disability and restoring blood flow to the brain. Despite its success, rt-PA carries a number of risks. It can cause bleeding inside the brain and may cause permanent damage. Consequently, this treatment is not appropriate for all stroke patients.

A doctor will first perform a medical history and physical examination to rule out other possible causes of the stroke. Blood tests will also be ordered to detect any heart problems or blood clots. An electrocardiogram or echocardiography will show if a heart problem is the cause of the stroke. Medications such as tPA can dissolve a blood clot, if they are detected within four hours of symptoms. The goal of treatment is to prevent stroke from recurring.

When a person suffers a stroke, emergency treatment is crucial. If it is not treated immediately, it can lead to brain cell death. A person with a stroke needs immediate medical care, so he or she should go to a hospital designated for stroke victims. The doctor will also be able to administer an emergency IV medication and clot-busting drugs intravenously. This will increase the chances of recovery and minimize complications.

One-third of all strokes occur during sleep. Because most people notice symptoms after waking up, it's important to seek medical attention as soon as possible. The symptoms of a stroke range from total paralysis to mild weakness. Patients may also experience a numb feeling or a pins-and-needles sensation, and facial muscles may droop lopsidedly. In severe cases, a doctor may decide to perform a clot-busting procedure.

Despite advances in medicine, stroke patients need immediate medical care. This can involve thrombolysis, a procedure used to repair or open a narrowing in a carotid artery. Another type of revascularization is carotid stenting, which involves inserting a device into the carotid artery and holding it open. The procedure also involves removing plaque and repairing the artery.

There is no single drug that is perfect for treating stroke. A new drug called rt-PA may improve the outcome in patients who have received it within three hours of their stroke. It's a compounded form of stem cell therapy. It has improved the recovery rate at one year after a stroke. And it's safe and effective. The newest drug rt-PA has a 30% recanalization rate when given within three hours of symptom onset.

There are three types of strokes. Men are more likely to have cerebral infarction and intracerebral hemorrhage, whereas women are more likely to experience a cardioembolic type. A major difference between men and women is the fatality rate. Women generally live longer than men, but women are less likely to seek help if the symptoms persist for an extended period of time. Moreover, a woman's condition may be the result of alcoholism, tobacco smoking, or arterial problems.
