The initial step in the treatment of Stroke is to determine the cause of the stroke and its severity. Your doctor will ask you to fill out a medical history. A physical examination will include checking your pulse, blood pressure, and heart rate. He will also perform neurologic tests. Your doctor may order laboratory tests to rule out other conditions or diagnose stroke directly. These tests are important for determining which type of stroke you are suffering from and will help determine the most effective treatment.

In cases of haemorrhagic stroke, surgery may be necessary. The surgeon may need to remove a bone from your skull and replace it with an artificial metal plate to prevent further bleeding. He may also need to undergo surgery to correct hydrocephalus, in which cerebrospinal fluid collects in the brain cavities and causes symptoms such as headaches, nausea, and loss of balance. Surgery to repair the problem can be performed with shunts, which allow the fluid to drain from the brain.

Symptoms of a stroke include sudden headache and numbness in the arm or leg. Most patients experience no pain, so a doctor may require a CAT scan to confirm the diagnosis. MRIs and CT scans of the brain are important imaging studies. In the event that you have any of these symptoms, your doctor will begin treatment as quickly as possible. Your doctor may also recommend surgery to repair the aneurysm or remove the blood pressure that is putting pressure on the brain.

Depending on your age and the severity of the stroke, you may require a long-term rehabilitation program. Fortunately, most survivors of stroke recover within the first three to six months. After that, progress can continue, though mental function tends to slow down over time. If you do need therapy, your health care team will be able to guide you in achieving your goals and returning to normal life as soon as possible. If you have experienced a stroke, you can learn more about the condition and how to cope with it.

If you experience any symptoms of a stroke, your doctor will use a variety of tests to identify the cause. A CT scan of your head is the most common imaging test for stroke. It provides a 3-dimensional view of the brain and may show signs of swelling in ischemic regions. Most strokes don't show up on CT scan until about 12 hours after the onset of symptoms. A CT scan may not show signs of a small stroke if the stroke is not severe enough to cause chest pain.

Teleradiography is likely to play an increasingly important role in the treatment of stroke in outlying hospitals and rural areas. Current trials are underway to develop neuroprotective drugs that do not require a CT scan to determine the cause of stroke. If all clinical trials were to be positive, ischemic stroke could be treated at any hospital or even in the field by paramedics. In the meantime, teleradiography may be a valuable tool for treating stroke, regardless of where it happened.

If a hemorrhagic stroke occurs, treatment should focus on preventing blood from flowing through the artery. In these cases, small blood clots form in the artery as it becomes narrower. When these clots develop, they may lead to a full stroke if untreated. In either case, a fast response to the situation will improve the outcome. But if a hemorrhagic stroke isn't detected and treated, it can lead to permanent damage to the brain.

After a stroke, a rehabilitation program may be necessary to regain physical function. Your doctor will recommend the best therapy program for you. He will consider your lifestyle, interests, and the availability of caregivers. If your physician has determined that rehabilitation is necessary, he will recommend the most appropriate therapy. But remember, the longer your rehabilitation program lasts, the higher the chance of a recurrence. A rehabilitation program can be expensive, but it is worth it.

Depending on the type of stroke, there are several different treatment options available to help the person recover. Emergency treatment of stroke, such as intravenous drugs that break up blood clots, must be given within four hours of the onset of symptoms. By taking these medications quickly, you will be more likely to recover and reduce the risk of long-term disability. In severe cases, a mechanical thrombectomy may be required.
