Sunstroke, also known as heatstroke, is the result of exposure to extreme temperatures. It can lead to the failure of major organs, and is the most serious heat-related illness. Excessive heat can occur from exercise, heavy work in a hot environment, or inadequate fluid intake. Individuals who are more susceptible to sunstroke include children, athletes, and diabetics. Additionally, certain medicines can make people more susceptible to heatstroke.

The primary cause of heat-related deaths in children is leaving them in hot cars. The temperature inside a parked car can rise 20 degrees in just 10 minutes. Therefore, don't leave children or pets in the car. If possible, lock the car. Even if it's unoccupied, make sure you have access to fresh water. If you can't avoid sun exposure, consider getting a shaded area or a car parked in an air-conditioned space.
