A TBI usually involves a period of unconsciousness. This period of unconsciousness, known as a disorder of consciousness, is long. It can be classified into different stages, such as coma, vegetative state, and minimally conscious. Each stage differs from the next in terms of awareness and interaction with the environment. While recovery from a TBI is not immediate, rehabilitation programs for TBIs can help people with long-term disorders of consciousness.

After the initial trauma, the brain will swell. The resulting swelling will cause further bleeding, reduced blood circulation, and possibly even death of brain cells. A TBI can occur due to a number of reasons, and doctors use four main types to categorize it. The severity of the brain injury is determined by the Glasgow Coma Scale, which evaluates the level of consciousness in a patient after a TBI. Some symptoms may be mild, while others may be very severe.

Traumatic brain injury is the result of an unexpected, violent or blunt force injury to the head. Common causes of TBI include car crashes, sports injuries, and assaults. The extent of injury varies greatly, but can result in temporary or permanent impairment of physical, cognitive, and psychosocial functions. In severe cases, a patient may require life-saving surgery. As a result, survivors of TBI may have to undergo a long, rigorous rehabilitation process.

This study looks at the long-term health status of veterans and service members following a TBI. However, it shows that very few of these patients return to work after a moderate or severe TBI. Veterans with moderate-to-severe TBI are more likely to be unemployed than those with mild TBI. This study is particularly valuable to VA rehabilitation services for Veterans who sustain severe TBI. It also identifies how many veterans are unemployed and which groups are more likely to be in these groups.

Traumatic brain injury occurs when a blow to the head causes a break in the skull or other penetrating trauma. In these types of injuries, the primary injury occurs at the time of impact and may affect a specific lobe or the entire brain. In addition, a person may lose consciousness if a bullet is inserted into the skull or when a violent explosion occurs. Once this has happened, the patient can experience symptoms of TBI such as confusion, disorientation, and memory loss.

Traumatic brain injuries are the most common causes of death and disability in adults. According to the CDC, they result in close to three million emergency room visits and nearly 2,500 child deaths. Loss of consciousness and neurological symptoms are the primary indicators of TBI severity, and the diagnosis is based on the type of traumatic brain injury. Depending on the severity of the injury, an MRI or head CT may reveal abnormalities. This is crucial for the recovery process of the victim of TBI.
