There are many different types of head trauma, including closed and open. Open injuries occur when an object enters the brain, such as a car windshield or a bullet from a gunshot. Closed injuries do not have this kind of exposure, but bleeding or swelling inside the brain can be a sign. Symptoms of a severe head trauma may include a heavy headache, bloody nose, loss of consciousness, drowsiness, and slurred speech. If you or a loved one has suffered from a head injury, seek immediate medical care.

If you or a loved one has suffered a head injury, call 911 immediately. The patient is likely to be unconscious. Although minor injuries can be treated at home, you should visit a medical professional if you notice any serious symptoms. Even if you feel fine, head injuries can worsen if you move them. When an emergency medical professional examines you, they will assess your condition and the severity of your head trauma. To determine the severity of your injury, check the Glasgow Coma Scale, a 15-point scale of mental status. A high score indicates a less severe injury.

Treatment for head trauma will depend on the severity of your injuries and where they occurred. For example, if you fall and hit your head while walking, you may need an intensive care unit to monitor your brain functions closely and prevent seizure attacks. A more extensive traumatic brain injury, resulting in significant damage to the brain, may require surgery. Surgery may be necessary to treat a brain hemorrhage or repair a depressed skull fracture. If you are at risk for a severe traumatic brain injury, go to an emergency room immediately.

Severe head injuries require immediate medical care. If the injury is severe, you will need surgery. Your medical professional may need to drain the blood from your brain, or perform an MRI. Surgery is an effective treatment for severe head injuries. Your doctor will assess your symptoms and determine the most appropriate treatment for your patient. Your doctor may perform several tests to determine the extent of the injury. If the injuries are minor, you may only need analgesics to manage pain. However, if the damage is severe, you may need sedation or cerebrospinal fluid diversion to prevent further complications.

If you suspect that a patient has suffered a head trauma, the first thing to do is stabilize the patient's head. If you are unsure whether or not the person is breathing normally, you should apply sterile gauze to the wound to stop bleeding. If you suspect a skull fracture, try to protect the airway by laying the victim on his/her side. If bleeding continues, apply ice to the swollen area.

The most common causes of head trauma include motor vehicle accidents and falls. You can lower your risk of head trauma by following traffic laws, wearing a seat belt, and wearing protective gear, such as a helmet. Even if the head injury is mild, the injury can cause brain damage. If the injury is severe, it can cause major symptoms, including Alzheimer's disease. In addition to falls, head trauma can occur spontaneously. And even if there is no head trauma, the brain may still be injured due to the blood flow.

For a child with a blunt head injury, experts have defined minor blunt head trauma as a case of mild blunt head trauma. Infants and young children younger than two years of age should be evaluated for signs of minor blunt head trauma. Signs include awakening and alertness to light touch. A Glasgow Coma Scale score of fourteen or less is also considered to be minor head trauma. A child suffering from mild head trauma should not require hospitalization.

While head trauma is a serious problem, most cases are not life-threatening. In rare cases, a severe injury may also result in serious complications. Severe trauma may result in a hematoma in the brain, a collection of blood outside the blood vessels. This collection of blood can cause pressure in the brain and lead to loss of consciousness. In severe cases, it can even lead to hydrocephalus. In addition to bleeding in the brain, a severe head trauma may cause a mass lesion that is not visible on CT scan.

When considering minor head trauma in infants, clinicians should be aware of two factors: size and location of the hematoma. A large hematoma on the scalp and non-frontal location suggest that skull fracture is more likely. A frontal hematoma does not indicate intracranial injury. Selective neuroimaging can also help identify infants at high risk for head trauma and acute management implications. So, if you or your child suffers a head trauma, don't delay care.
