BEFAST and FAST: An Overview of Current Treatments and Future Directions - Oren Zarif - Befast

A stroke is a life-threatening illness. It is the third leading cause of death in the U.S., and there is a good reason for this. If you suffer from this condition, you must act immediately to protect your life and that of those around you. A stroke can have devastating effects, including long-term disability, so it is crucial to recognize the signs and symptoms of a stroke. You can do this by following the acronym BEFAST, which stands for Balance, Eyesight, and Face.

This study used nine databases to identify a large number of articles published since 1995, which included studies with BEFAST. Data from the databases were removed from duplicate records and the full texts of 5,865 studies were examined. The remaining 201 studies were excluded as reviews or meta-analyses, while 12 had no corresponding titles. Of the remaining papers, nine were extracted from the data, according to data extraction requirements. The results of the analysis were presented in an overview of current treatments and future directions.

Future prospective studies should investigate the diagnostic value of BEFAST and FAST in patients with suspected ischemic stroke. If these tests are successful, they can improve the recognition of stroke and improve timely intervention, reducing the burden on society and families. It is important that future studies consider whether BEFAST and FAST can be used as a single screening tool for all patients with stroke. Further studies need to be conducted to determine if the diagnostic value of BEFAST should be independently evaluated for anterior versus posterior circulation.
