MRI or computerized axial tomography (CAT) images are the gold standard for determining whether a person has suffered from anoxic brain injury.

Other common causes of anoxia are lung disease, anaemia, and carbon monoxide poisoning. Inhalation of carbon monoxide causes anoxic anoxia and may cause slow deterioration in the patient's condition. In some cases, this may be permanent, or it may last only a short time. However, the risk of anoxic brain injury increases significantly if a person has any other medical conditions.
